It is all preference, but I'm happy to stick with my 5.1 set-up (although I
do have the option to go up to 7.1).
Actually, I take that back. I don't have a choice and it isn't about
preference. It is about the fact that my wife won't let me add any more
speakers in the living room.
Cheers, Derek

What are people's experiences with different speaker set ups? I think 7.1
is a bit overkill and maybe should stick to just 5.1 or 6.1 but would like
to hear everyone else's opinions. |

Yes there is that factor as well LOL.
But seriously, if a sound engineer can't mix a soundtrack to achieve a
coherent soundspace using 5 channels and a subwoofer (in the average
loungeroom size) what the heck is he/she doing in the job? In a cinema with
the far greater distances involved 6/7 or more channels might even be OK to
achieve a surround ambience but in normal living room size it is just
overkill.

id try the 6.1 to 7.1.
many new soundtracks now are encoded with a discrete 6th channel, so the
sound is there and not being output if you only have 5 speakers.

The only possible answer to that is "marketing hype".

There isn't much on the rear center channel of DTS ES 6.1 Discrete. I
heard a little bit in "Gladiator", but nothing significant that the
left & right surrounds couldn't fill in. I'm considering removing my
rear center speaker...
As for 7.1, I'm not a fan of matrixed sound. Wasn't a fan of Dolby Pro
Logic, not of fan of DPL 2. Doubt I'd be impress with 7.1
