Does anyone here have experience using an SPL meter to adjust and
voice-match their speakers?

I am about to buy the Radio Shack analog SPL meter to setup my 5.1 system
but am still a bit confused about exactly what to do?

Do I buy a test disc and match the signal sent to what the SPL meter says by
makign adjustments ont he receiver? How close do I put it to each speaker
to match them?

Thanks alot for any help you can offer.

Jason

You can match by using the test tone on your receiver, if it does not
have one, then the individual channel levels should all match
initially (0db or whatever is center). Then you can fine tune it to
your room or ear by selecting a place on the radio dial where there is
just hiss (white noise) and use that as the test tone. Then get each
channel to sound equally as loud from your listening position. You
don't need a meter to do this. You can verify the settings on the
receiver Vs the final sound impressions where you set it up for
differences, but who cares? After that initial adjustment you may find
that you prefer the center turned down just a bit or the surrounds up
a bit more or whatever the case may be and you can make fine
adjustments at that time. In a practical sense, you are done when it
sounds best.

Another test DVD is Avia. It and Video Essentials are available at

Buy a DVD called Video Essentials. It will not only help you setup your audio
step by step but will also show you how to adjust you video screen, monitor or
TV. It is a must.
