I am interested in buying either a 42in or bigger HDTV or a wall
mounted projector, i have seen both and want to know what others feel
is a better by for under 5,000 dollars. I use a few projectors at work
and the quality is great and the screen can be over 12ft wide compared
to a 42in tv what are the up pros and cons of either? what would you
do with the 5k HDTV or lcd?

reply here or to me directly.

Thanks
Craig

Wall screens are nice, but expensive and limited in size

rear projection boxes are the worst since they employ a fresnel lens and are
dark at the edges.

front projectors are the best.

three gun are nice but hard to callibrate and expensive. you can get a used
one cheap

LCD is not as clean as DLP some people complain about the "screen door
effect" due to the black border around the pixels. Newer more expensive LCD
have virtually eliminated this but the cheap ones are suspect.

cheap DLP has a rainbow effect on one color wheel machines (under $3,000)
soon the price will fall for multi wheel dlp and it will be the most
economical. I purchased a BENQ cheap DLP for $1100 new. very satisfied.
twice as bright as my old BARCO 3 gun and I paid less. Also it takes two
people to carry the BARCO and the new one is smaller than a laptop in
footprint.

multi color wheel DLP is probably the best. Even RUNCO, a tube biggie has
added a DLP line. but they are expensive.

I would recommend a DLP and will later upgrade to a three wheel unit. In
the meantime I justify the expense as "business power point presentation"
rather than T2 or Aliens, which to date is running

movies 247 hours
power point 4 hours

also you may want to consider a ceiling mount rather than a wall mount
one more thing... get a projector with keystone correction so you can vary
the angle and still get a rectangular picture rather than a trapazoid

I agree. I've starting year 8 on my rear projection TV and plan to move to
a projection unit next. It doesn't make sense to invest in a fixed size
HDTV which is 65" max when I can have a 100" projected image for the same or
less money. I'm still undecided on DLP vs LCD. I've not seen the infamous
rainbow problem and I like the new LCDs so its hard to choose.

Don't you need more of a darkened room for FP vs RP? We mostly have
lights on all around our den and still get an excellent pic on a
Toshiba 56" HD RPTV, but I suspect a FP image would be more washed
out. Of course this is probably of no concern if the TV is in a
dedicated home theater room.

this is exactly right, fp pictures are washed out by ambient light

so here is the trade off between rptv

Pros

RP
-Good brightness in light room
-usually more inputs

FP
-extremly high quality picture in comparision to most rptvs of the same
price
-in enclosed area much large screen size
-most are portable (i have a 65" tv that is smaller than a piece of paper
and 2.5 inches tall)

Cons

RP
-poor viewing angle
-Grainly on cheap sets
-Expensive for a good picture
-Temporary / permanent burnin on tubes (dlp/lcd rp's are not affected)

FP
-you want a good picture your gonna have to board up those windows or get a
2000 or 3000 lumen projector
-I find that most take a good 3 mins to reach full brightness which is a
little pain.
-Easily shifted causing you to have to reset the angle slightly if it is on
a table
-Room mounting can be hard and expensive for tube base projectors, and
mainly just expensive for others (unless you build a mount yourself like i
did)

well, this is mainly how i see it
some can argue some aspects, but that is pretty well the low down i would
say
if you can block the light entering the room, fp is the best
and normally blocking consistes of $50 of black out cloth Smile
