I would use Optical for anything over 20' - 30' in length. AFAIK you
can use optical cable with typical electronics for anywhere from
100' - 500'. In other applications with powerful transmission it is
easily run for miles. You will avoid any RF interference that way.

Can I go 50' with Digital Optical?
If not, can I convert to a Digital Coax signal and go 50'?
I'm trying to get a DD signal from one room to another about 50' away.
The only DD output I have available is Optical, but the receiver on the
other end can accept either.

Thanks,

That shouldn't be a problem as long as you've got a good quality optical
cable. Don't buy a plastic sheathed one, go up a few bucks to get a glass
one.

I have successfully run optical cables several hundred yards before (on
computer networks). 50 feet should be no problem.
