I am interested in knowing how many trophies are awarded by societies at
their aos judged shows. I'm curious as to special trophies ("The William
Somebody Oncidium Award" as well as Best of Class, Best of Show,
President's Trophy, etc., and whether these are actual 'trophies' (i.e.,
other than ribbons, pompom ribbons, etc) such as plaques, cups, plates,
or what have you.
I'd love to ask this on the AOS forum as well but there doesn't seem to
be an appropriate area for it.

Denver has best of class flower and plant generally trophy in the fall
show and Rosettes in the Spring show.
Special endowed trophies. Either set by the board or endowment paper.
Some set up by spouses some set up when people left collections to the
society for sale/fund raiser. each is a $50 Check. Although some
years greed has caused some to say it was to have been both a trophy
and a check.

Louise Krueger M. T. Best Cat walkeriana hybrid Flower (Fall)
Ed Horton M T Standard Cat.flower (fall)
Sometimes the same plant will win best flower and the special or
sometimes the plant eligible for the special (walkeriana) is not the
best in class.
The proliferation has lead newer members to say during discussions
that these are set by board because they are the only ones with the
collection or experience to win. Or that they are "aimed" at the
boards collections.
Memorials for funding Libraries or new Technology for the group is a
better and longer lasting more universal benefit.

Here is a listing of the trophies that are given out at our society's
show each year. These are actual trophies and not ribbons. Ribbon
judging is done earlier in the evening and the trophies are given
afterwards. The trophies we give are either made of acrylic or glass,
depending on the show. I hope this helps answer some questions.

Wow! Who robbed the bank to pay for all those??
Seriously, how large is the society (and where?)and what are dues there?
One of the reasons we're looking at this is the expense involved for a
small society. |

We are a small club, about 100 people, so our show is small. Its held in a
space about 18 x 24 - about the size of a display in the San Francisco show.
The sales area is about 3x that size.
A few years ago our society decided to name the best of class trophies for
the founding members of our club, so there's the Bernice Lindner trophy,
Stan Dinsmore trophy etc. I think there are 9 in all. These are actually
printed pompom ribbons that the person gets to keep or recycle for next year
if they choose to. Next year the Best of Show will change to the Founder's
Trophy, with all the names of the founders on a crystal vase which the
recipient gets to keep until the next show.
These are given to what the team of judges as a whole think are the best
catt, best phal, best whathaveyou orchid. In other words at that level the
ribbon can go to a beginner, advanced or whatever level of experience. And
they *are* awarded to beginner growers all the time in our club, so the
older growers with extensive experience and collections don't always get the
trophy.

I am with the Heart O' Texas Orchid Society in Austin, TX. Our web-
site is www.hotos.org. We have an average of 70 to 90 members each
year, and our dues run $25 a year. This helps pay for the expense of
the show, seminar, monthly speakers, Christmas dinner and so forth.
The trophies run between $10 and $15 for the acrylic and $30 to $40
for the glass. We have a list with the trophies listed for those that
want to sponsor a trophy. We usually ask for a $10 donation for the
acrylic and $30 for the glass. Some of the trophies don't get a
sponsor, but we have some folks that will sponsor 3 or 4 at a time.
This is strictly voluntary, but it does help to defray some of the
cost.

What a timely thread. At our meeting on Tuesday we began to take names of
trophy sponsors for our show, which is in early March.
We give trophies (with rosettes as well) in a wide variety of categories.
Best Phal, Dend, Vanda, Vandaceous, Cattleya (under and over 4"), Paph,
President's award and so forth. We also award trophies and rosettes for the
best table top (card table size); society display (100 sf on the floor);
best vendor's display (6' table top); best cut flower display (these are
miniatures); and as of last year best orchid photography. For flowering
plants there are separate categories for individuals and commercial entries,
so vendors are not competing with hobby growers. All trophies are
accompanied by certificates. We also purchase an AOS trophy.
I think there are 27 in all (need to go back and look at my list to be
sure), and we generally have sponsors for all of them. A lot of our members
sponsor trophies, and some businesses do as well. All trophy awards are
decided by our AOS judging teams.
Additionally, there are innumerable ribbons awarded.
As far as space, we have about 7500 sf over all. It's a nice space and we
place the displays so that people can go from vendor to display; IOW, we
don't keep the sales area separate from the displays. The floor displays are
done by invited societies; we don't compete in that. The table tops are
generally done by our members.
Door prizes are given on the hour. Local businesses are terrific about gift
certificates and in some cases merchandise.
