The connection is between an xbox 360 and my home theater receiver.
Normal stereo outs work fine.
I have steady red light from the xbox port.
I have steady red light from the end of the cable when it's plugged
into the xbox port.

Can I assume that the xbox and cable are good and that the problem is
with the home theater receiver?

Thanks,
Ed

When troubleshooting, never assume anything.
Does another optical input work, or do you have
another one? (into the same receiver input)
There have been a number of X box defect
motherboards, (thousands and thousands)
Microsoft is supposed to be replacing the
boards at no charge. In fact so many defects
that the XB has not realized a profit, despite
the number sold. It's most likely the X box,
however you need to confirm that by trying
another optical source into the same receiver
input. Borrow one from the neighbors and
try it again.

Definitely not. The red light has to be modulated and demodulated
for it to work. The problem could be anywhere.

OK, good to know. I'll have to find a known working optical device
and try that.
Since I'm on my 3rd xbox it won't surprise me that it's probably that.
