I have been looking at this JVC AV48WP74 model to buy lately. It looks
pretty good from the specs
(http://www.jvc.ca/en/consumer/product-detail.asp?model=AV-48WP74) but
oddly enough there are no reviews on the internet for this model. The
previous model (AV48WP30 -
http://www.jvc.ca/en/consumer/product-detail.asp?model=AV-48WP30) got
good reviews and a lot of positive comments on cnet (100% positive
from 36 people at
http://reviews.cnet.com/4852-6475_7-9729365.html?legacy=cnet&tag=subnav).

Anyone having bought this model care to comment? Or can the experts
look at the specs and suggest what looks good / bad. How does this
compare to the Sony KP46WT500
(http://reviews.cnet.com/4505-6484_7-20688347.html?legacy=cnet&tag=pdtl-list)

What I am worried about is that the new model is listed at 1899 (CAD)
vs. the old one at 2299 (CAD). Is this just standard electronics
prices going down with time, or is the new model lower in quality /
features / etc.

Regards,

I would be more concerned about service availability. Make sure there is
someone locally who is JVC authorized to service these sets and that they
are very comfortalble with them. JVC is typically not highly regarded among
servicers for their design nor for their support. They are very arrogant in
their refusal to provide support to non-ASC servicers and their power supply
designs are notorious for being sensitive to power surges and difficult to
repair. You need a servicer who does a lot of them if you want effective
and efficient service. The performance varies greatly on their products, so
be sure to evaluate carefully.

Leonard,

Thanks for your advice. I was planning to buy from Sears / Bay (big
Cdn retailer a la JCPenney) with extended warranty (both say that
their warranty includes one visit per year by a techie for lens
cleaning / convergence, etc., so I was planning on using that upfront
for convergence work).

I would reconsider. The extended warranty is likely a very poor value and
the service that you will get is likely very poor. Find out who the
warranty is with and whether they are JVC authorized. Findo out who will do
the warranty work if it fails during the warranty period. Do your homework
before buying...read the fine print and between the lines.

This is good advice. Lack of service is one of the reasons that convinced me
to return my JVC AV-48WP30. All I wanted was a servicer to clean a smudge
off the inside of the screen. After a few phone calls, it was obvious that
getting service wouldn't be easy.

The TV also suffered from annoying scan line artifacts, colors appeared
unnatural and the user interface (remote/on-screen menus) was unintuitive.
Also the screen shield was poor (highly reflective) and the TV lacked a
variable Audio-out.

QV, how long ago was this. I checked on Cnet, and everyone seems to be
ga-ga over their AV48WP30 (37 / 37 positive comments). I am not
doubting your opinion but just trying to understand the discrepancy. I
have heard comments from people that the first stock of that line was
pretty bad quality and since then they have improved a lot.

I'll look carefully at the service options available at Sears and Bay
as per Leonard's previous comments.
