Using a Yamaha YHT6028 5.1 Surround package...
Will using one of the newer type (fiber optic/optical, HDMI etc.) plugs
negate the use of the older style 3-colored, plugs going to my HDTV ?

I checked Yamaha's website and could not find your system so I
am shooting in the dark here. HDMI carries audio and video.
The three colored wires you refer to are component and are
analog. They only carry video. Does your receiver accept HDMI
connections? If so, that may be the best way to go. You have
to get the video to your television, too. If you can't use
HDMI, then either the fiber optic or digital coaxial for the
sound and component to the display.

Thanks for the reply Chip, your information was most appreciated. In terms
of being able to find the link, perhaps this equipment is only available
outside the U.S. Here's the link from the Canadian site:
http://www.yamaha.ca/av/Hometheatre/YHT6028XM.jsp.

That explains why I couldn't find it! Thanks.
If I understand your question, my original answer stands.
Use component from your video source to the receiver,
then to your display. Use either the optical or digital
connections for the audio, whichever one you prefer.
