Pulls, Handles, Hinges & Knobs: A Quick Review

Decorative cabinet hardware is available in many styles and finishes, and
also in many sizes. If you can imagine it, you will likely find it
somewhere.

Whatever the mood or style of your kitchen (or bath) or your taste in
cabinetry, you can find decorative hardware to match. Whimsical, artistic,
elegant, ancient, primitive, quiet, excited, very modern and antique styles
abound. Colors and finishes range from bright brass to soft gold, to
pewter, to silver, to aged stains, to glossy paints and other effects.

You can also choose between a vast array of knobs (see some examples at
location below) or an endless variety of full-handled pulls (see some
examples at location below). And this is only the beginning.

Back plates are available in many styles and finishes for pulls. Back
plates (or backplates) are not only decorative, adding depth and ambiance,
but they are also very handy when remodeling, since they can be used to
cover up holes if the new pulls are a different size than the old.

Then you have the hinges. To start with you have different kinds of hinges,
and they are chosen to match the kind of cabinet doors you have, and how
they are hung. Basically, you have flush-mounted hinges, lipped hinges,
inset hinges, flush overlay hinges, or reverse bevel hinges.

Some cabinets have framed faces and some are unframed or "box" cabinets.
These fundamental differences will determine whether your hinges are visible
or concealed. The more visible your hinges, the more likely they are to be
decorative as well as functional.

Leading suppliers of decorative cabinet and specialty door hardware include:
Shaub, Amerock, Belwith Keeler (now Hickory Hardware), Hamilton Decorative,
Acorn, Ashley-Norton, and Blum
