Bluray w/DVD-A Support?

Sony is not the only manufacturer that makes blu-ray, and the terms of
the license do not preclude a blu-ray player with DVD-A capability
(and since Panasonics first player did play DVD-A, the proof is
already out there)

Again Blu-ray are not specific to Sony, and the terms of the license
do not preclude DVD-A in the other manufacturers players. Whether
DVD-A is ever again included in a blu player has nothing to do with
Sony, it has to do with the fact that DVD-A is essentially dead and
not a feature that other manufacturers think will sell players.

Given the expense of a BR player ( and sony's poor reliability for optical
drives) I'd go with separates. Play DVD-A's on a player designed
for superior DVD-A playback, and leave only hidef movies to the BR player.

The Bluray 1.1 profile is a set of hardware requirements governing
memory and video capability. All new players being sold now must meet
these requirements, the problem is that older players will not be able
to access all the features/extras that will be available on new releases.

You want a combo player?

Take a DVD-A player.
Take a BR player.
Duct tape them together.

If you have a hundred bucks left over, get a receiver with more than two inputs.

Right. That isn't a 'whoops' though The older 1.0 players will still be able
to play the 1.1 implemented discs, just not access the features like PIP. No
different than older Dolby Digital 5.1 receivers not being able to play the
Dolby TrueHD codec.

I understand that this just affects the ability to view the extras, not
the movie itself, and maybe it is just me, but I would be really
irritated about this. I stayed on the sidelines waiting for the format
war to end, but if I had bought an early Bluray player, and then
discovered I couldn't access all the features on a new disc, I would be
upset.

That always has and always will happen, just as my point about audio codecs
pointed out; a new disc may have Dolby TrueHD, but unless your player can
process that codec you're stuck with having to use Dolby 5.1 Heck, I
recently purchased the panny BD30 which DOES have profile 1.1, but guess
what? Profile 2.0 is on the way.

The format wars are over, but the format wars had little to do with the
firmware Profile; it had to do with which laser to use along with its
attendent capacity of usable storage. BOTH formats were immature and would
have gone through major and minor changes through the upcoming years until
the next video format arrives ( probably direct downloads from the WWW onto
a portable harddrive or flash drive). Take a look at standard dvd as an
example: just how many standards changed over the life of SD?

If folks are expecting a ironclad standard or Profile to develop in blu ray
players which will not change, I would suggest they get over that
expectation 'cause it won't happen. The potential behind blu ray means that
its a long way from tapping out its full capabilities for information
presentation. Does anyone doubt that future 'must have' features on discs
are still yet to be discovered in the imagination of a tech geek somewhere?

If it's not Profile changes, then there will be a new video processor chip,
or a new audio codec, or a new A/V connector standard.
