Hello,

I'm helping a church to buy a projector which will mostly be used to
do presentations in a small setting (50 people) with some ambient
light. They're a very small group so I'm really trying to get them the
best for their money. They asked for something portable, perform well
with lights on and affordable.

So I searched through and have come up with these choices:

Toshiba TDP-T45U
Dell 2400MP
Sanyo PLC XU48

I was very close to buying the Dell but then I looked at the lamp
replacement, it is $399 versus the Toshiba which is $250-299. I was
initially considering the Sanyo but then I notice the huge difference
in contrast, sanyo being much lower than the other two.

Would welcome any feedback you could share...thank you!

You need a 3 lens CRT projector to use in ambient
light, there are no LCD projectors that are bright
enough. Don't waste your money on one, you are
better off buying a large LCD flat screen.
LCD manufacturers have been using the "super bright"
deception, these projectors are not super bright.
Furthermore you will need a glass bead screen
which is not cheap.
The kind of projector you want costs $17000.00
otherwise you will be getting poor performance.
Look for a projector with at least 10,000 lumen
or more brightness. Sony 3 gun is the one I
recommend, but it costs a lot.

Once again the only professional installer
differs from the armchair installers.
There are lots of installers who would
sell you one of those heaps and promise
you that it's the greatest projector
in the world, but after you spend $1260.00
on replacement bulbs, $1500.00 for
blackout curtains, $2000.00 for
a bead screen you realize the picture
although now visible, is awful.
And then it dawns on you that you could
have purchased a fairly decent LCD 60"
for $8000.00 and watched it in ambient
light with no problem at all.
The question being do you want to buy
something you really are going to use or
something that's a trendy gimmick ?

You offer no proof that you are a "professional installer". And if you are
one, you are a piss-poor one who hasn't moved past the clay tablet and
stylus in your mode of operation.

You've really got a credibility problem regarding lcds. And who ever said
that he was purchasing anything from an installer. Try operating in the real
world, you might just learn something.

You didn't even read and comprehend the OP, did you? Or do you really
believe that a 60" anything is suitable for a Church auditorium? Some
installer you are, you don't even understand the setting....
bwahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

Yeah, LCD and DLP are real trend; just a passing phase. Your moronic
ignorance is simply laughable.

The troll comes out from under his bridge, barfs up even more inanity,
before slinking back into the depths of his fetid hole.

Gee, LCD/DLP projectors are just so dim, that must be why they've taken
over from CRTs, and why every LCD installation in a conference
room/auditorium I've seen can work with the lights up instead of dimming
them like a movie theater. Just has to be due to the superior brightness
of CRT!

Ignorant and damned proud of it aren't you? If you are a "professional"
I pity your employer and, even more so, your customers. Bet you're still
recommending Beta over DVD too.

You say you want this projector for presentations in a non-darkened
room. And you're looking at projectors in the ~$1000 category.

First, ignore mykey. He's a nutcase.

Second, if the primary purpose of the projector is not watching video,
then you're in the wrong newsgroup for the best advise; you're
shopping for office equipment, not home-theater gear.

Third, when choosing a projector for presentations, the most important
factors are:

1) Warranty support. (I have a number of Sanyos deployed in the museum
where I run the AV department; their support is first rate, and they
offer a 3-year warranty. I have no experience with Toshibas, and don't
think much of Dell support, fwiw.)
2) Lamp life (not lamp price). Look for a projector with 2000 hour
projected lamp life, and the difference in the price of replacement
lamps will not matter so much. You could give a 2-hour presentation
every day of the year and not need to change lamps for 6 years with a
2000 hour lamp.
3) Contrast ratio is not a big deal unless you're looking at
photographs or video. But no projector in this class offers excellent
contrast ratios anyway, and manufacturers' claims are meaningless.
Look for test reports instead.
4) An array of inputs to match the equipment you'll be working with,
including a DVI input for modern laptops.
5) The correct focal length lens and zoom range for the screen size
and projection distance you plan to use.
6) A quiet cooling fan if the projector will be placed near the
audience.
7) Effective keystone correction.
Cool A good protective case.

Between the Dell and the Sanyo (or equivalent projectors in this class
from companies like Sharp, Canon, etc.) I think you could choose based
on features and warranty. There won't be a lot of difference in image
quality.
