Are there any newly announced Bluray players that support DVD-A? I came
across an older Panasonic player which did (DMP-BD10), but this player
seems to have a number of flaws.

Don't look for this to happen.

Sony is exlcusive BluRay, and exclusive SACD which competes with DVD-A, so I
doubt it will happen.

Well, your reasoning is poor, but I wouldn't expect the outcome to be
different.

SACD and DVD-A are basically obsolete and the various companies
manufacturing Blu-Ray players are unlikely to see a need to add DVD-A
capability.

Those in the music market wanting to put out hi-def recordings would
be better off putting out blu-ray discs and use Dolby True HD or the
DTS equivalent to appeal to the audiophiles.

However there is no reason that the many other bluray manufacturers
other than Sony can't make SACD or DVD-A capable players.

The reason for this inquiry, my current DVD player supports DVD-A. I
only have 4 discs, their sound quality is fantastic, but I dont want to
lose the capability to play them. Eventually I will upgrade to a Bluray
player, and I suppose I can always keep the old DVD player just for
DVD-A. Seems kind of silly to have a piece of equipment for such
limited use, but I dont think I have much of an alternative.

Are either of those capable of 96khz, >20 bits, lossless?
At the very least, no audiophile will consider a format that isn't
lossless.

Number of flaws?

It is probably the best all around bluray player made to date...

and the only one that will play DVD Audio disc.

I based the 'flaws' on the review on cnet.com. There were issues with
having to manually lift the front flip down panel, poor remote, long
load times. I trust that in playback mode there are no issues, and
newer Panasonic models have addressed these issues, but the DVD-A
support is gone.

Dolby True HD is 24 bit/96khz at up to 18mbps, lossless, can support
greater than 8 channels, but blu-ray specs limit usage in blu-ray to 8
channels (7.1)

DTS-HD is 24 bit/96khz at up to 24.5mbps, lossless, can support 8
channels on blu-ray disc (7.1)

The disadvantage is that these must be passed over HDMI, but
realistically if one sets up with an HDMI capable receiver blu-ray
becomes a system able to deliver HD video, with audiophile grade
sound.

If the media companies choose they can deliver older albums as audio
only stereo/multichannel mixes on blu-ray. They could add all sorts of
multi-media to that album with the storage capacity of Blu-ray as
well.

Now that the format war between Blu and HD-DVD is officially over we
can hope some creativity begins to spark in the entertainment world
for content (OK now I'm being unrealistic)

Actually my reasoning is spot on. That's why no Sony players support DVD-A.

No, your reasoning was off. Blu-Ray is licensed to other manufacturers for
production of BluRay DVD players. There is NOTHING in the licensing
arangements that keep other manufacturers from including DVD-A capability in
their products.

We're not talking about other manufacturers, we're talking about Sony. Show
me a Sony Bluray player that will fully support DVD-A.

Actually, it would be a surprise to see any Sony product that supports
DVD-A.

No, 'we're' not. We're talking BluRay players with DVD-A support.

Sony is exclusively BluRay, but BluRay players are not exclusively Sony.

Clear now?
