Hello,

I purchased an Onkyo DR-C500 from an online auction. Monday (1st day) it
played my CDs and DVDs fine. Thursday it displays "READING" for about 2
minutes followed by "DISC ERR". While the unit was manufactured in
August 2002, it is out of warranty because it was not purchased from an
authorized dealer.

The reciever portion of the unit works fine

I suspect: laser cleaning or alignment, the pickup mechanism, or the
lasers themselves. When the discs are removed, they are 'warm'.

Has anyone had similar problems/experiences? What was the cost to fix?

Being into the 5th day of becoming an audiophile, I have learned to check
if your equipment must be purchased from authorized dealers only
