I have a Sony 40" XBR flat screen tube t.v. (about 6 months old) and
have been getting small, light green distortions on the right side of
the screen for the past two weeks. It's small, maybe 3 inches tall and
1/2 in wide - right on the very edge of the screen. There's an even
smaller green distortion on the upper left hand side of the screen
too. It's very noticeable when the picture background is a light color
or white but can't be seen if it's black or a dark color. At first I
thought it was the subwoofer being to close to the screen but moving
it made no difference. What could be causing this and how can I fix
this? Any help would be appreciated!

That subwoofer probably did it. Sony TV used to have a built in
degausser that would run when you turned the set on. You can try to
turn it off and on a couple of times and see if it gets better. Keep
that sub away.
Otherwise you will have to get a degaussing coil to pass over the
screen.
Good Luck.

Mark,

Thanks for the advice. I moved the subwoofer away from the TV today
and have noticed a small reduction in the distortion. I hope there
wasn't any permament damage! Next question: how or where do I get a
degaussing coil? Can I just go buy one and use it (is it easy to use?)
or do I need to get a TV repairperson to come and do it for me?

Actually one can do more harm than good with a degaussing coil if not careful
and knowledgable -- the degaussing coil is a relative sledgehammer of a tool
and modern TVs have fairly delicate shadow masks. Before you go this step
simply wait a few days and power cycle the TV a few times a day (the TV will
automatically do a mild self-degaussing each time it is turned on cold) and see
if your problem doesn't improve. I've had hideously miscolored tubes right
themselves over a short amount of time.

I agree. Be patient. Maybe Radio Shack website has a coil. Do some
reading first.

I must admit I haven't used one in 20 years.
