First off I am not an audiophile and do not need to spend a small
fortune on speakers...mediocre ones are good enough for me.
I would like a recommendation on floor speakers in the $300 price
range for my main speakers. I will add surround/sub/center later as I
have ones that are adequate for now.
This setup is for home theater, not music. I like to listen to movies
a little on the loud side, but not TOO loud.
I was told that I should get a pair of good bookshelf speakers for
around $300 and save up for good speakers, but for me and my ears $300
for floor standing speakers is fine.
Thanks!
Eddie

Silly me...what I meant was what speakers would you recommend so I can
find a dealer and go listen to them. |

Well, which speakers told your ears they were good enough?

At a garage sale I purchased a pair of EV century 3 cabinets (as large
as
washing machines) for $50. These had reconed JBL 15" speakers
and EV high frequency drivers, a few scratches but what the hell.
Just goes to show you that the speakers dreams are made of can be
had for a pittance.
Some footwork and a few minor repairs can yield major results
compared to buying new speakers.
One helpful hint: HUGE speakers that blast at earthquake levels
are dumped by house wives because they don't like BIG audio
equipment. That's where you can cash in with a pair of MAGNAPANS
or other killer speakers for a price that won't bust the piggy bank.
Don't settle for mediocre when you can have the best speakers at
USED price. |

So, the $300 number is based on economic/rational factors and not on
experience? In any case, the only recommendation I can give is to
find a decent audio store that offers quality brands like B&W,
Paradigm, Focal, Canton, PSB, etc,, and real listening rooms. The big
chain electronics stores generally have all their equipment on open
shelves in their large open rooms; that's no way to audition anything.

I have 250Watt KLH floor speakers then added surround center and rear
speakers. The big speakers are great for music but doesn't seem to be a good
match for surround. If you want a good surround experience get a system. I
have a $60 Logitech system on my computer and it has better balance but is
low on power for anything bigger than my little computer room. A higher
powered system like this or Klipsh (any name brand?) may be the way to go. I
think Best Buy sells them but don't recall seeing them set up for demo.
Seldom go in the speaker area though.
Surround sound probably doesn't require as much power as you think.
Acoustics in your home will probably be much different than a show room
anyway. Sub-woofer sound is ~nondirectional and can be placed out of the
way. Reduces the need for such large speakers else where. YMMV Good Luck |

JBL control series is a studio monitor type sound in a very small
package,
if you must have new speakers these are worth a listen, but always
plan on
adding a sub woofer later if not now. I found these control series a
good choice
for small listening areas, put the bose speakers (at twice the price)
to shame.
you will find the controls on sale once or twice a year. |

My friend has Bose speakers. The sound has a "depth" to it. However in no
way shape or form is it surround. |

Your wife must be blind.
