seems like headphones are the best solution
you just need really good headphones
which will not press against ear lobes,
comfortable for long period,
sound good, etc...
but since you hate headphones, close
proximity speakers installed at ear level,
4 channels of 5.1 amp used for separate volume
control, but which 5.1 amp has built in VCs for all 5 inputs?
Other than that, 2 RCA Y cables will split the stereo into
4 RCA plugs which will drive 4 channels of 5.1 amp,
the (speakers) headphones will connect to the banana posts.

two separate amps with built in VC's, balance, tone, headphone /
speaker
capable, would better suite the need I think
you could find two inexpensive integrated amps
and feed them from rca Y cords, split the signal from entertainment
source.
there is such a speaker that is made to mount to a microphone stand,
active or passive, or pole mount speakers, look under "pro sound
speakers"
some of these mount to a pipe type fixture. wall mount may be non
usable in
your application. then theres a few hi fi speakers that come with
appropriate
stands, taking up less space than the pro sound mounted.
then theres the floor monitor, bookshelf may work better

I do not see why you need Dolby 5.1 if you are using only two channels
and only two speakers. Or do you need 2 per listener? In any case, a
simple AVR with an all-speaker-stereo setting would do the job. If
that is too elaborate, just a stereo amp with 1 or 1 pairs of speakers
placed close to each listener might suffice.

Yes, a stereo amp or recceiver with a mono switch (because stereo seems
unnecessary in this situation) and enough line-level input pairs to
accommodate your sources (sounds like two are needed); a pair of speakers
(you could use cheap barstools to hold one up near each seat, stick 'em down
with velcro); set the overall volume and then adjust for each listening
position using the balance control. Simple and cheap (I'll bet you could get
decent used stuff for $150US total), and you can listen to the radio on it
too.

Both hard of hearing and need speakers with individual tuning/volume
controls. (We would hate to wear headphones)
I have a decent Sony tv and a modern digital hard drive recorder. Both
require audio output through an amplifier to give me speakers other than
the two provided by the tv.

I was thinking that an amp. with Dolby 5.1 would provide such outputs
for the speakers I need. However, it seems that only a few expensive
amps mention Dolby at all.

I was hoping to spend maximum 200 GB pounds or 400 dollars on the
amplifier. I would need a stand kit to hold the two speakers at (seated)
head height, so they would have to be smallish and lightweight.

I would be grateful if someone would point me to a solution, even if it is
to a more appropriate newsgroup.

Thanks.
