This isn't a format war question, but specific players

I want one or the other and can't decide which. I can get a Sony PS3
with BD for 399 or a Toshiba A30 HD-DVD on sale for $299. I was
planning on the A35 but it's $200 more than the A30 so I'm willing to
consider accepting a bit less...

I not that much into games but I do have interest in a quality driving
simulation.

My concern is the connectivity for video and audio. My TV has a
DVI-HDCP (no HDMI and my receiver has optical and coax (also, no
HDMI).

Will both of these system work without an issue (except for an HDMI >
DVI cable)? Other than the format wa, any reason anyone can think of
to lean toward one vs the other?

I think you should consider the gaming element carefully, because
that's the compelling reason to get the PS3.

If your primary interest is in upconverting SD DVDs, with the ability
to play one of the HD formats as a nice bonus, then the cheapest
Toshiba (A3 or leftover A2) could be all you need. I have an A2, and
its upconversion capabilities are often astonishing, viewed on my 42"
Sharp Aquos.

If there's a compelling reason you need the A35 instead of the A3, and
gaming isn't an issue, then I would first see what people are saying
about the upconversion ability of the PS3, and then choose on the
basis of which platform offers more desirable (to you) titles.
