Hey guys, I'm putting the finishing touches on my "Cletus 200" system
for the
not often used living room, to be used 99% for music. It's a gathering of
2nd hand and broken/rotted surround, receiver and speakers. Fun little
project
that has gven me results I never expected. Sounds very very dang good for a
mutt system. I was amazed.
Question: The Sony 5 channel 120W ProLogic Receiver.... works great, Until..
I hook up my old 12in 500W Velodyne Sub. Then the receiver goes into protect
mode after just a minute or so.....
The sub is connected using it's built-in crossover. (ie) Amp level
signal coming out of the
receiver, then into the Velodyne, then out of the Velodyne to the
speakers (the 2 mains).
The pretty standard setup when the receiver doesn't have LFE outs to
feed the sub.
I had this sub setup on in the Florida Room with a cheapie cheap old
receiver and that
cheap receiver never went into protect mode, even when pushed very very
hard.
Is it possible the Ohm Load is somehow dropping when going through the
sub? Or Something
of the such? Throwing the Receiver into protect mode?
Now this receiver has an Ohm Switch on the back, I just discovered.
(8Ohm/4Ohm).
Would it be a bad idea to feed the Sub/Speakers a 4Ohm load instead of
the required 8Ohm
load the speakers require? I know you can't run speakers with a lower
Ohm Load Rating
than the receiver pushing them (overworks the amp). But I don't know
about the other way
around. Pushing speakers that are a HIGHER Ohm Load than the receiver.....

The system is the afore mentioned:
Sony 120W ProLogic Receiver:
I'd had from the ProLogic Heyday.
Really nice, powerful receiver, if you don't require 5.1.
Heck I think I paid over a Grand for it back in the day. LOL
Mains:
Old 1970's or so 4ft tall big very heavy Pioneer Tower Boxes built with
1/2in MDF.
Just loaded them with Morel MDT20's Silk Dome Tweeters. And
Morel 5.25in Closed Back Mids. And rebuilt the rotted surrounds on the
Pioneer
12in poly treated paper woofers. Lined the boxed with 2in Acoustic
Fiberglass insulation, and added Parts Express Lg. Adjustable Spikes.
Spackled and feathered all the old speaker screw holes (Didn't match the
new Morels).
Masked and Painted the front of the cabinets Ultra Flat Black. And made
new ID plates
for the front of the mains with "Cletus 2000" in JPL Orange and the JBL
Horn Artwork.
Matches the JBL Logo on the center speaker. HAHAHAHA!!!
Center:
is a FANTASTIC JBL 4412 Studio Monitor, three way, titanium dome,
paper/poly mid
and 12in cast frame super heavy JBL woofer. I had to replace the rotted
surround
on the JBL Woofer also. (A friend frikkin threw the other one away
because the
surround was rotted..... and yes I choked him out
Surrounds:
are JBL J50's. Which I got from another friend that also had the woofer
surrounds
rotted out. Very nice bigger bookshelf speakers from JBL's quality
period, like the 4412's.
I get a nice clean musical slam from the bottom now, with 3-12's up
front and enough
power to keep plenty of headroom, but would like to add the Velodyne for
that last
few lower freqs. Just to help support down below 50 or so htz....
