OK
Well another question.... can a 5.1 system be used with
only THREE of the speaker... the sub and tow
satellites? |

This is why I ask...cause it seems to me that all the
modern TV's are very lacking in audio and speaker
department...hence the "need" for some kind of external
home theater system even if its a cheapie! True? |

Ok thanks for all your help guys!!
I know my questions seem weird but my budget is very
very tight..... yet would like to get something to use.
Just looking at things from all angles first.
I could just go ahead ad set the extra two speakers up
front as you suggest so as not to run the wires behind
the couch.... but it does sound like its important to
keep a "load" on those extra tow channels instead of
NOT hooked up at all. |

I would suggest that a stero pair of very good bookshelf speakers and
a modest stereo receiver would sound better and cost less, while still
giving you options to expand in the future.
These "front-only surround" systems use various forms of signal
manipulation and distortion to create an artificial surround effect.
That's their purpose. First sell people on the necessity of paying a
lot for multiple channels of tiny speakers, then get them to pay even
more for fewer channels that only emulate the effect of the real
surround system.
Good bookshelf speakers will accurately and cleanly reproduce all the
sound that's there, except for the lowest bass (which these
compromised systems -- and no Bose systems -- can reproduce anyway).
It won't be surround, but you've already given up on that anyway.
You should shop for used speakers and receivers; classic stuff from
decades past that still sound as good as anything made today, for
pennies on the dollar because they come in unsexy rectangular 2-cubic-
foot boxes. |

You'd want to check the manual for the speakers. Unless it specifically
states you can you'd need to keep a load on the outputs. Of course you can
put the speakers anywhere if surround isn't important.. |

Absolutely correct!
Save your money and buy a vintage AM/FM receiver of about 20 wpc
(Pioneer, Sansui, Sony, etc.) and a pair of bookshelf speakers. Hook
the L+R of the TV audio to the AUX in of the receiver - switch off TV
speakers, of course. I've done this for years on the second TV in the
household.
BTW, our main TV has a Yamaha 5.1 system with PSB Image 2B's, Image 9C
centre and a vintage Wharfdale rear. Sub is a 12 inch Mission brand.
Cheers,
Roger
