Hey Folks,
I have a couple of questions that will obviously expose my lack of
knowledge about these types of things.
First off, I have a Yamaha RX - V650 reciever, its hooked to a
Magnavox 42MF230A Plasma tv. (The TV has an HD Tuner built in. )
I also have a Panasonic DVD-RP62 dvd player. 7.1 speaker setup.
Here's my first question... In the reciever's manual it talks about
the different sound field programs. It lists 33 different programs
for AV sources 13 more for music sources, with a brief description of
the fields. For example, one of the fields is named DTS ES
Disc6.1: Sur. Enhanced - then a description of Cinema DSP enhanced
processing (DTS - ES Discrete) for DTS sources.
honestly, that means close to nothing to me. As I understand it
different DVD's are encoded in different ways, and when I play a DVD,
the reciever should be picking the correct "program" However, in the
manual it mentions something about "feel free to choose a sound field
program based on your listening preference..."
so, am I way out to lunch? or, is the manual possibly only talking
about something else. When I switch from different sources on the
receiver it displays "DVD AUTO" I'm assuming that means that the
receiver is picking the best program for me? when I switch to 6.1
sound on a DVD (lotr for example) the reciever displays a DTS logo on
the display
What are these Sound Fields? and should I screw with them? also do I
need to muck with them when watching HD TV
Second question involves the DVD player, I used to have it hooked up
with a single RCA plug style cable to my reciever, and then from the
reciever to the TV with S Video cable. When it was set up this way I
had to change the display setting on the TV all the time to "wide"
from "normal" which I used to regular TV watching or else the display
would be in a 4:3 mode rather than "full screen" now that I have the
DVD player hoked to the receiver and then to the tv with component (3
color) cables I don't need to change things, ( also the picture is
better) is this normal, or did I change something on my DVD player
without knowing it?
Thanks for all your input.
Dave
oh, I should add that the TV, receiver and DVD player are hooked
with the optical digital audio cables
