I have a 42 plasma, so I was wondering if I should buy a upconversion
DVD player. Will I actually notice the difference or is it just a
selling gimmick. Thanks.

I depends on how good your TVs ability to do the scaling vs the dvd player.

My Panasonic plasma is a 720P. For standard DVDs, I use a Denon 2930 CI --
with its Reon processor -- to do the upconversion to 720P. This results in a
spectacular standard def picture that the TV just can't touch. And it is
much better than my former Oppo DVD player. Even my Blu Ray Panasonic BD30
player can't do as good a job on standard def discs.

Let me add this addendum:

For the money, it would be a shame not to consider the new Oppo DV-983H,
which will be released in March. The review from the well respected Secrets
DVD Benchmark Review series at http://www.hometheaterhifi.com sounds like an
absolute winner. I sure plan on ordering it and doing a thorough A/B
comparison with my Denon. Oppo also has stellar customer service.
